My somewhat tongue-in-cheek letter about Sussex By The Sea (November 24), as rendered at the Albion, provoked two interesting replies and it seems I was wrong to believe it was the regimental march of the Royal Sussex Regiment.

My error goes back to when I wore the cap badge of the county regiment as a 16-year-old Home Guard in 1940, when we marched behind the regimental band to a parade at Sussex County Cricket Ground.

I first recall Sussex By The Sea was played at an Albion game on a cold, February night in 1960 when we met Rotherham United in a second replay FA Cup match at Highbury.

We won 6-0 and, at some stage, our supporters broke into Sussex By The Sea instinctively - and using the correct words.

Nowadays, the chorus is sung at breakneck speed to banal words about "going up" and "winning the cup".

Norman Wisdom tried unsuccessfully to put words to it during his spell as Albion director.

Perhaps the Albion's poet in residence could find us stirring words to be sung at 120 paces per minute.

We could have our own anthem, like West Ham and Pompey, instead of having to use the same chants as most other teams.
