I am pleased Ken Fines recognises the desperate need for more affordable homes in our city (Letters, December 8).

But I do not understand how he can say the "proportion of flats in the provision of social housing is far too high".

How can this be the case when so few affordable homes, of any type, are being built in Brighton and Hove?

Fact: Brighton and Hove has the highest proportion of one-person households and the smallest average household size in the South-East.

Fact: Brighton and Hove has limited opportunity for new housing development and it is important to maximize the potential of brownfield sites to ensure the protection of the downland and green, open spaces.

I know this because people, including my staff, tell me they would love the opportunity to live in a Frank Gehry-designed flat at the King Alfred site.

It is laudable that such a fantastic development is providing 40 per cent affordable homes and it is a pity Ken Fines and Valerie Paynter continue to oppose the plans.
