Police have re-issued an apology to a pensioner who was arrested under the Terrorism Act after being manhandled at the Labour Party Conference.

Peace campaigner Walter Wolfgang, 82, was detained in September for trying to get back into the Brighton Centre after he had been thrown out by stewards.

Sussex Police later apologised for the arrest. However, Mr Wolfgang, a Labour Party member for 57 years, rejected the concession after the force blamed his detention on a "mistake" by an "inexperienced" officer.

Mr Wolfgang's legal advisers said more than 600 people were stopped and searched under the same Terrorism Act powers and not all by the same "inexperienced" PC.

Assistant Chief Constable Geoff Williams said: "We have already apologised to Mr Wolfgang and we do sincerely regret the incident and any distress this has caused.

"I have met Mr Wolfgang personally to explain what happened and apologise."

Mr Wolfgang was dragged from the conference for shouting "nonsense" during a speech by Foreign Secretary Jack Straw on Iraq.
