Bus travel across Sussex is being made free for the over 60s from April.
Council chiefs in Hastings and St Leonards said about 10,000 residents in their area will benefit from the changes.
The scheme has been launched by the Government to enable older people to venture out for free.
But some critics say it has placed a burden on alreadystretched council funds.
Councils will be given money to reimburse bus companies for the free travel but many say they will not receive enough to cover it.
Hastings transport councillor Godfrey Daniel said: "I am very pleased that we are able to put Government funding to good use in providing free bus travel for over 60s in our town.
"Residents should be reassured that current passes will qualify them for free travel from the beginning of April.
"We have about 10,000 residents who hold bus passes at the moment and I am confident that all holders will enjoy the new benefits of free countywide travel from April."
Anyone who wishes to apply for a concessionary bus pass should visit Hastings Information Centre or call 0845 274 1001 for more information.
