Eastbourne Borough Council is to be congratulated for the success of its "trees from cans" scheme.
Your readers may be interested to know a similar scheme is being operated by West Sussex County Council in partnership with our district and borough council colleagues.
So far, we have seen a staggering 4,680,000 million aluminium cans - 72 tonnes - being recycled in West Sussex, which means the county will receive 72 free trees.
Sixty-five of the trees will be planted in West Sussex and the remaining seven will be donated to a sustainable forest project in Burkina Faso, Africa.
This is an excellent scheme because: It is encouraging people to recycle, which is vital because the volume of waste in our county is growing every year.
As well as giving recycling a boost, residents are also helping improve their local landscape.
Everyone can take part. All you have to do is recycle your aluminium cans through can banks, kerbside collections or any community recycling schemes run by the district and boroughs.
-Frank Wilkinson, cabinet member for strategic planning West Sussex County Council
