A chief inspector has agreed to a meeting with the owner of a shop he has described as a thorn in his side.

Steve Barry, district commander for central Brighton, last week said he was "horrified"

Jennifer's Shop in St James's Street had applied to Brighton and Hove City Council for an alcohol licence.

He said the grocery store had shown a "continued lack of responsibility" in selling alcohol in the past four years.

Jennifer Balsham, from the shop, has since started a petition asking customers to support the application.

Now Mr Barry has agreed to discuss the issue with Mrs Balsham.

Until the licensing law changes on November 24, Jennifer's was using a wholesale licence to sell crates of beer and wine.

The shop wants to be able to sell single cans or bottles in the day and wholesale quantities at night.

But while there has been no problem with the 24-hour shop serving underage drinkers, Chief Inspector Barry believes its alcohol sales have led to worsening anti-social behaviour in the street outside.

The council is accepting public comments until January 19.
