John Hollins has revealed he has no money to spend in the transfer window.

The Crawley manager has been told he must release players before he can bring new faces in.

Club owners the SA Group said money could be made available during the January window when they took over in the summer.

They made a £50,000 bid for Stevenage striker Anthony Elding two weeks before Hollins was appointed at the end of November.

That money seems to have dried up, leaving Hollins to pick up players on the cheap.

He said: "At this moment in time we cannot take anyone at all. We are right on the line and we can't get anyone in yet. That might change but only if I get rid of three or four players first.

"We are watching players. I have gone to a lot of games and (assistant) Alan Lewer has gone to millions.

"He has a very good head for knowing which player plays where and what their strengths are. I will use that to my advantage and see what we can do."

Hollins will receive the Conference manager-of-the-month award before tomorrow's home game against York.

He has guided Reds through a sixgame unbeaten run since taking over and shares the December champagne with John Coleman of leaders Accrington Stanley.

Hollins is confident he can continue to get the best out of the squad he inherited from predecessor Francis Vines but admits a lot of hard work still needs to be done.

He said: "We have not got a bottomless pit of money so we have to keep working on the players and make them better.

"Everyone is playing at 110 per cent and I could not have asked any more of them but you can always get better.

"We have been giving the players exercises to try and get them fitter and stronger. We tell each player what we want them to do and how we want them to play.

"Some of them have been able to do it and with the ones who can't, we just keep working hard to try and improve them.

"I have only been in this league for six weeks, so I'm pleased to get the award. It shows we are doing something right and hopefully we can carry on."

Top scorer Daryl Clare reckons Crawley should be aiming to sign two new players during the window.

Clare, who took his tally to eight goals with a brace in Monday's 2-2 draw against Woking, said: "Every club will probably be striving to bring in maybe two good players and I'm sure John (Hollins) will be looking to do that.

"Whether we are in a position to do that at the moment, only the people behind the scenes who make that decisions know.

"The club is in a transitional period and this season is about consolidating and improving slowly."

Midfielder Danny Brown returns from a one-match suspension against York but defender Dave Woozley is serving the second of a three-game ban.

York are unbeaten in three games and are six points off the play-off places in eighth. Striker Andy Bishop is the second highest scorer in the Conference with 12, three of which have come in the last three games.
