May I join with many others in paying tribute to Rowan Dore?

I have followed his career over many years. Apart from being a superb local journalist, he was a loyal servant of the Liberal Party, standing in a hopeless cause in Rottingdean year after year.

I must, however, correct an inaccuracy in the letter from Roger Hudson (December 30).

It was not the Liberals who paved the way for the Labour Council in Brighton. It was here in Regency Ward in 1985 that Labour won a sensation by-election which deprived the Conservatives of their majority.

Of course the Liberals helped create the shift in opinion which allowed Labour to win the council in 1986, ironically the same year the SDP/Liberal Alliance lost their last seat on the council.
