I read with interest Adam Trimingham's article about public transport.

Adam is obviously lucky enough to rely on public transport, or the bicycle, which in theory is great.

I worked for BT (near Durrington Library) until 2002. Now, try getting from Sompting, say the Ball Tree or Hill Barn Garage, a fair walk for me, to Durrington Library by 8am by bus. It can't be done.

Okay, go by train and it's a mile walk to Lancing station, a mile-and-a-half walk from Durrington station, taking a long time door-to-door for about a four-mile journey. (Yes, Stagecoach will say you can get there by 8.03am but that's not 8am.)

An alternative is to go by bicycle. Sorry, I'd rather live for more than a week! Have you tried that journey by bike, whichever way you go?

So I went by car and it took less than 15 minutes to go four miles.

Now try getting from Sompting to, for instance, Wisborough Green, or even Southwater by 8am, as I sometimes had to, by public transport.

By the way, the journey door-to-door from Durrington to Sompting, leaving at 4.30pm, took nearly one and a half hours, having to change buses at Worthing, and then a long a walk from the seafront at Lancing.

All very nice in theory to go by public transport, and yes it's great if I just need to go to Brighton or round the city, or even a social visit to London in the evening, but if you've got to work elsewhere, forget it, you have to take the car.
