As a relative newcomer, I found Christmas shopping in Brighton a sad and hollow experience. In Worcester, every shop plays Christmas carols, a life-size manger scene stands in the High Street and church groups, all dressed in bright clothes or in Victorian styles, sing carols.
There is plenty of Christmas cheer and peace and goodwill, and even some itinerant preaching. Not so in Brighton. The very heart and soul of Christmas has been removed because there has been a concerted effort to remove Christ. I did not see happy, smiling faces for all this.
If we remove Christ from Christmas what have we left? Presents and food. For what? Next year let's put Christ back into Christmas and have something to rejoice about.
