A son and daughter have vowed to stand by their 80-year-old father after he was accused of their mother's murder.

Frank Melton Peters, of Alma Terrace, St Leonards, is charged with murdering his 72-year-old wife Monica Peters.

His son and daughter, Robin Peters and Jane Pell, yesterday united behind their father after he appeared in court.

In the statement, which was read by family liaison officer PC Chris Francis as relatives stood behind him, Ms Pell and Mr Peters said: "We would like it known that we love and support our dad in his time of need.

"We offer him our time and prayers.

"We, as a family, feel that it's important that we give dad all the love and support that has always been given.

"This will never be taken away, regardless of the outcome of any possible forthcoming trial.

"The family would appreciate time by themselves to come to terms with the loss of their mother."

Peters is charged with murdering his wife between January 1 and 4. The body of Mrs Peters, 72, was found by police at the couple's home on Wednesday morning.

Peters, who appeared before magistrates in Hastings, was remanded in custody to appear at Lewes Crown Court on January 20.

He was charged with his wife's murder on Thursday evening. Unshaven and looking confused, he spoke only to confirm his name, age and address during a ten-minute hearing in court.

Members of the family watched proceedings feet away.

At the two-storey house where Mrs Peters' body was found, flowers were yesterday laid on the front doorstep.

Attached to them were moving messages of sorrow in memory of Mrs Peters and passing condolences to the family.

One read: "Mum, you are walking with angels."

Another stated: "Thinking of you my lovely friend and neighbour. Love from Noreen."

A post-mortem examination was being carried out but further tests are also required.

The death has shocked the Silverhill community.

One resident said: "It sounds awful.

"My heart goes out to the family. I can't imagine what they are going through."
