With regard to Tony Mernagh (Letters, December 31), something indeed needs to be done about parking in the city of Brighton and Hove.

This Christmas I did not buy one thing from any city shops. Being disabled, any journey needs to be planned. The bus service from my home is one every half-an -hour. This is totally inadequate, forcing me to use my car. Instead, I used the internet and shops out of town.

The reason the park-and-ride plan failed is simple - you do not knock down homes, tear up allotments or, worst of all, upset animals to park cars. Anyone with an iota of common sense would know that but this seems to be lacking in the city's leaders.

This city needs a football stadium but the residents of Falmer are not at all happy about the site. The park-and-ride suffers for the same reason, so let's put these problems together and see what we come up with.

Mill Hill is used when football is played at Withdean so make this the park-and-ride site. Close the bottom end off and make the entrance and exit at the roundabout at Dyke Road. Buses can run a circular route.

Build the stadium at Waterhall, have a railway station put in for local commuters to use so there's no need for them to drive to Brighton or Preston Park stations and football fans can be off-loaded at the ground.

Before the football fans yell foul, the stadium plans allow it to be switched to any viable space and Brighton and Hove City Council also owns the land.
