So BBC Southern Counties Radio has decided to get rid of John Radford, its much-loved morning presenter.

John is a rare species in local radio: Intelligent and erudite, he never talks down to his listeners. And his humanity is dosed with caustic wit.

For two years, once a week, I had the pleasure of sparring with him on the events of the day:

He is the most skilful interviewer I have encountered.

The airwaves of Sussex, and even those of Normandy, will be impoverished by his departure. Let us hope his warm, rumbling tones will not be totally silenced.
