Opponents of a waste burner planned for Newhaven packed out a church last night to register their disapproval.

About 60 people filed into St Michael's Church in Newhaven to hear campaigners from Defenders of the Ouse Valley share their arguments against Onyx's proposed incinerator.

Last month, East Sussex county councillors approved the waste local plan, a blueprint for how to deal with waste over the next decade, which also includes plans for recycling sites in Maresfield and Hollingdean in Brighton.

Protesters have threatened to lodge an appeal and will urge Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott to call in the plan for further scrutiny.

Proposals for an incinerator - or energy recovery facility as it is called by waste contractors Onyx - still need to be approved by the council's planning committee.

If given the go-ahead, it would take three years to build and would process 210,000 tonnes of waste from East Sussex and Brighton and Hove every year.

Onyx says the incinerator is vital because landfill space will run out soon.
