Contractors got a telling off from Southern Water after emptying thousands of gallons of water onto the streets.

The dumping of about 200,000 gallons of water onto the streets of Queen's Park, Brighton, coincided with emergency measures being put into place to combat Sussex's worst drought for a century.

Reservoirs in the county are barely half full and hosepipe bans remain in force across much of the area.

The water came from a reservoir off Queen's Park Road, Brighton, which was owned by Southern Water until it sold the site off for development. A spokeswoman for the water firm said "Because (the developers) are going to destroy the reservoir they decided to empty it.

They have been told it's not acceptable. We have told them it has to be tankered away."
