I don't know what the fuss is about over the proposed axing of the Gatwick Express.

The train's fare costs about a third more than that of Thameslink or Southern and only takes five minutes less to get to London. This isn't much for a 30-minute journey and represents poor value for money.

I know almost no one, other than overseas visitors, who use the service and who haven't worked out they're being conned.

Having got rid of the express, it would be better to use the free slots to add extra services to the South Coast and connect more people to the airport.

This would also make it quicker and easier for visitors to come to Sussex, rather than just heading to London.

Gatwick would then truly become a South-East airport, rather than a second, further away London hub.

The Gatwick Express slots could be used for the South's stopping services, allowing the Brighton Express to run even at peak times.

That's got to be good for commuters, visitors and businesses in our city.
