A family held a vigil outside Brighton police station yesterday, seven years after the racial murder of a 42-year-old father of two.

No one has been brought to justice for the killing of accountant Jay Abatan, from Eastbourne, outside the Ocean Rooms night club in Morley Street, Brighton, on January 24, 1999.

Two men were arrested but no one stood trial for murder. One suspect later committed suicide.

Mr Abatan's family organised a 90-minute vigil in John Street, Brighton, as part of their Justice For Jay campaign.

Mr Abatan's brother Michael said last night: "We will keep on fighting and we will get there in the end."

Internal tribunals resulted in disciplinary action against Sussex Police officers who were involved in the investigation.

Mr Abatan said the family had a string of concerns including the fact one officer gave good character reference for defendants and that police did not set up an incident room for the case.

He said: "Officers in the tribunal said they were told to work on other priorities, to work on Jay's murder investigation 'in their downtime'."

He said the family was still not allowed to see the full report into one of two inquiries into the way police handled the case.

He said: "Victimised through the operation of state machinery, the Abatan family's struggles bear many of the hallmarks of inadequacy and lack of transparency of the criminal justice system that has seen the killers of Stephen Lawrence walk free."
