Hassocks gave Horsham a real fright in the Senior Cup before the Ryman division one side presented manager John Maggs with an emotional semi-final clash against former club Crawley.

Maggs admitted he was not impressed by his side's performance especially as it came so soon after Saturday's 4-2 league defeat at Met Police.

But they did show their quality after leftback Matt Geard was red-carded five minutes before the end of normal time for lashing out at Richard Thomas.

After that, Horsham tightened up and won the tie with a goal four minutes into extra time by Carl Rook.

That was Rook's second goal of the match but it was the first time the visitors had led.

Hassocks stunned them with a goal by Thomas after only five minutes and they held the lead until the 50th minute when Lee Carney finished precisely after being allowed space from a throw-in.

Horsham were level for less than two minutes, however, as keeper Gary Elliott came off his line to thwart Pat Harding and only succeeded in presenting the ball to Mickey Turner, who finished superbly with a cool lob.

Hassocks were only sorry Thomas could not repeat that finish from a great chance midway through the half and they paid the price when Rook levelled the tie on 74 minutes and then won it with a simple finish in extra time.

The Hassocks manager Dave John was pleased with his team's performance but realised it was a case of 'if only' as they went out to their higher-placed visitors.
