I read with utter dismay John Plowman's letter (January 30) proclaiming parking charges in Brighton are forcing drivers out. Oh, please. You only live in Woodingdean, for goodness sake, and you're stupid enough to bring your car into Brighton to go Christmas shopping.

Why put yourself through such unnecessary stress when we have an excellent bus service? I also suggest you look beyond your own selfish needs at the wider picture which is making its impact increasingly felt. It's called overuse of the car and environmental damage.

How naive, too, to suggest Brighton will become a ghost town because motorists are deterred from coming here. It certainly hasn't been the case with other cities which deter motorists from entering them.

It's time you started adapting, Mr Plowman, and thinking not just of yourself but of the collective good.
