A man who drowned after he fell into a ditch while relieving himself has been named.

Patrick Webster, 33, was found by police in a canal near Rye at 4.30am on Monday.

He had been driving back to his home in Etherton Way, Seaford, with his wife and a friend at around 3am when he stopped to go to the toilet.

It is believed Mr Webster slipped down a muddy bank into a ditch and despite frantic efforts to pull himself out he fell into deep water and drowned. The two women raised the alarm when he failed to return to the car and two police officers from Kent later discovered the body in a ditch close to the A259 at East Guldeford.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious.
