"A snapshot of Brighton life and culture," is how director Linda Waller is describing Coffeehouse, a series of fast-moving sketches written by a selection of local playwrights which recognises that eavesdropping is for many the pastime of choice.
This is the second Coffeehouse production in two years from the Brighton-based theatre company Caffe Inglese (the first was seen by Julian Clary, who declared it "engaging in a way no conventional theatrical experience could be").
Coffeehouse 2006 is once again utilising the cosy intimacy of Kemp Town's Red Roaster. The cast pretend to be customers - and the audience, seated among them, overhear snatches of their conversation.
"We knew it had to be a good story with a beginning, middle and end," says Waller. "We've ended up with 16 weird and wonderful sketches that celebrate the wacky nature of Brighton, its characters and their various intrigues."
Running until Sun, 8pm, £7, 01273 699733.
