Supporters of Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Deghayes have pledged to pull a "stunt" outside the High Court in London to champion their cause.

Save Omar protesters met at St Joseph's Church Hall, Brighton, last night to discuss the next step of their campaign.

Mr Deghayes, 37, a law graduate, has been held in the US military base in Cuba for almost four years without charge.

A few days ago more than 1,000 people attended a national demonstration in protest at the continued imprisonment of nine British residents at the base.

Jackie Chase, a leading Save Omar campaigner, said: "So many people came together and I think we should do it again very soon. We need to raise the profile of the campaign." Fellow campaigner Louise Purbrick said: "We need to move this from being a local campaign to being a national campaign. We have to carry on doing what we are doing."

Brighton organisation Save Omar has been lobbying for justice for months.

It collected signatures from the public in the battle to free Mr Deghayes, a former Brighton resident. The group has also written an open letter to Prime Minister Tony Blair, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and Home Secretary Charles Clarke. Now the group plan to spread their cause further afield by organising speeches to be held across the country.

It also plans to protest outside the High Court in a "disobedient" stunt.

Ms Chase said: "I think we need to slog it out and get across the country and speak to people so that they get our message. We need to go to town halls and speak to people.

Ms Purbrick said: "What we have achieved is that people now know Omar's name. We have successfully informed our constituents and now it is about reaching people beyond that. We need to discuss a disobedient type of action or stunt outside the High Court which will get our message across and raise awareness.

"We are are also going to organise a speaking tour as soon as we can. We will go from town to town across the length and breadth of the country."

A play called Guantanamo, Honor Bound To Defend Freedom will be staged by members of Save Omar on February 11 (8pm) at the New Venture Theatre Company, Bedford Place, Brighton.
