Overseas airlines are calling on British airports to secure more fuel following the Buncefield oil depot fire.

American carriers are calling on BAA, which owns and operates Heathrow, to end a rationing system which favours British carriers.

They are concerned that fuel shortages could affect Gatwick when the summer season starts. Rationing was brought in by BAA following a fire at the Buncefield Oil Depot in December.

British airlines are receiving 82 per cent of their usual allowance and overseas airlines 70 per cent.

American Airlines and United Airlines are leading the call for more fuel.

BAA said there were no shortages at Gatwick.
