I was troubled but not surprised to read today the lead article about the rise in carbon dioxide emissions in Brighton and Hove (The Argus, February 21).

Although I think Brighton and Hove Bus Company runs an excellent bus service and implements a number of other commendable policies, I still think it could do much more.

One long-overdue measure would be to implement a congestion charge and to levy further financial penalties on 4x4 cars entering our city, just as Rome has done recently, by charging drivers of these hugely ridiculous and dangerous vehicles triple the normal rate to enter the city.

Ideally, these cars would incur a punitive level of taxation to reflect the damage they do.

names such as "wild frontier" and "defender" will continue to roll in the face of an impending global oil crisis and a developing global climate crisis.
