As a representative from the North Laine Community Association (NLCA) and someone who is concerned about the local environment, I can't let the letter from Zoe Masterson about Orange Row (Letters, February 17) go without a response.

I am only a representative of a responsible organisation, one which believes in managing change in the area and ensuring North Laine retains its eclectic mix.

I am not aware Clarence Square is in our area. When I last looked at a map of Brighton, it was clearly part of the Regency Square area.

The NLCA has always taken its role as an amenity organisation seriously and it is one of the few which can claim to be democratic, with all decisions decided by our members at our monthly meetings.

It is not against change but wishes to manage it. We have worked with Brighton and Hove City Council on the brief for the Jubilee Library and the Brighton Station site.

We are proud to have influenced the area over the years and have often received praise for our efforts.

Without the NLCA and its actions over the past 30 years, we would not have the North Laine and could easily have had an out-of-town superstore on the station site.

As far as the proposed live/work units, does Zoe realise how small these are? They are referred to as pods. They will make her one-bedroom flat seem large.

Our objection is that, like many live/work units, the work unit often becomes living space.

Our concerns are whether they will be affordable for artists or local residents. The NLCA doesn't consider their use as workspace viable, given the size of the units.
