Danny Midgley could be about to become a Bear for the second time.

The 6ft 5in shooting guard from Burgess Hill will meet with Genesis Brighton Bears coaches Nick Nurse and Phil Waghorn tonight to discuss signing for the rest of the season.

Midgley recently parted company with Spanish third division outfit Estudiantes de Lugo, having previously played division two college basketball in the United States.

Bears, who host Plymouth at the Triangle tonight (7pm), hope he can give them extra depth.

Point guard Ronnie Baker plays his last BBL game for a month tonight before heading to the Commonwealth Games.

Waghorn said: "It would be nice to have Danny on board, firstly as another body but also as someone to work hard and take any chances he gets.

"I've not seen him play for a while but, with Ronnie going, this gives him an opportunity.

"He can put the ball in the basket and he is big enough."

Midgley spent the 2000/01 season with Bears as they finished bottom of the Southern Conference, totalling 26 points and ten rebounds in 15 short appearances off the bench.

He then had an enjoyable college career at Maine Machias before trying his luck in Galicia with Estudiantes de Lugo, the back-up team to top-flight Leche Breogan.

In 16 games for Estudiantes, he averaged 15 minutes, four points and two rebounds, shooting at 40 per cent from the floor and 50 per cent at the line.

Bears still hope to bring in a big man before the deadline for signings on Tuesday wiuth Martin Henlan one of the options they are assessing.

Two veteran former Bears are back in the BBL. Corey Jackson, axed by Brighton in November, has joined troubled Leicester Riders, who visit the Brighton Centre next Sunday.

And James Hamilton has signed for a second stint at Chester Jets.

Meanwhile, London Towers hotshot Chez Marks, one of the league's best players, has seen his season ended by injury.

He is replaced by 6ft 4in Antonio Hudson, a product of Shaquille O'Neal's old college at Louisiana State.

Richard Midgley is in the running for a regular season title with California Golden Bears.

Cal are neck and neck with UCLA at the top of the Pac-10 Conference, both teams having 11-4 records.

Midgley is sixth in the Pac 10's three-point shooting percentages with a strike rate of 41.2.
