Joe Gatting and Joel Lynch have been cleared to play in tonight's FA Youth Cup quarter-final against Newcastle at St James' Park.

Manager Mark McGhee initially did not want the pair to be involved as the Seagulls have an important game coming up at Plymouth on Saturday.

Striker Gatting and leftback Lynch have forced themselves into first team contention in recent weeks, with Gatting starting the last four matches and Lynch playing in six of the last eight.

However, McGhee has now given the pair permission to play at Newcastle, which means Gatting will be leading the attack.

Albion players have put their hands in their pockets to back the youth team's bid for cup glory.

Members of the first team squad have each donated £100 to help give the youngsters the best possible preparation for tonight's game.

The under-18s faced a gruelling journey to the North-East by coach until former club captain Paul Rogers stepped in.

Rogers, now the Seagulls' sales manager, suggested a whip-round to cover the cost of return flights and a two-night stay in a luxury hotel. The players, together with a band of local businesses, were only too happy to help.

Skipper Guy Butters said: "Everybody has chipped in and £100 is coming out of our wages.

"I never got the chance to play at St James' Park, so it should be a good experience for the young lads."

John Sullivan is ruled out by an ankle injury, so Richard Martin plays in goal.
