New York City's Gogol Bordello make The Strokes look about as punk as Britney Spears.

Fronted by the charismatic Ukrainian-born New Yorker Eugene Hutz, the eight-strong, culturally diverse Gogol collective fuse gipsy music, rock'n'roll and other rebel sounds from Flamenco to Slavic stomp.

The highly theatrical band have just released their third album, Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike, adding a touch of metal and dub-wise sound effects to their gypsy blend.

"Gipsies have a savage way of making music," says Eugene, who is part Roma himself. "They come from a culture where music is the only means of survival. Like reggae, it was created by poor people who have nothing but music; you can feel its rebel soul in every note."

Delivering their message in English, Spanish, Ukrainian and Italian, Gogol Bordello visualise an international cultural revolution which eclipses language barriers.

"Gogol is a collective, musically, spiritually and politically," Eugene says. "We create a party atmosphere to deliver messages of social and political commentary.

"All great bands are a cultural revolution army of creative individuals. With our music we try to reach out and remind people music is where moments of great freedom and where great friends could be found.

"It's all about tribal connections. The first time I saw Iggy Pop on video I knew that.

"But rock 'n' roll is dying in the West. It does not deliver the energy it was supposed to. Instead I'm creating my alternative, and that is Gogol Bordello."

Eugene also recently made his acting debut playing the Ukrainian character Alex in Everything Is Illuminated, based on Jonathan Safran Foer's acclaimed novel.

Upon meeting Eugene, initially to talk about creating the film's music, director Liev Schreiber immediately cast him in the main role. "He looked at me and asked me if I'd ever done any acting," says Eugene.

"Then he asked me, 'could you do that guy Alex?' I said, 'I don't have to do that guy, I am that guy'."

Everything Is Illuminated which also stars Elijah Wood, is coming out on DVD at the end of March.
