If we want a new sports facility on the King Alfred site - a new set of pools, various courts, a gym and so on - then it has to be paid for.

Now, we can pay through our local council tax to the tune of £47m or have a commercial set-up which includes guaranteed social housing, shops, and, yes, posh flats, which will finance the whole thing.

Let's use the prestige of those posh flats for the local good.

Speaking of prestige, it's an opportunity to promote Hove on more than a local level.

International interest will bring trade and money to the area plus it will be exciting.

Let's not copy other southern seaside towns which have become retirement areas.

And don't forget the many teenagers and chidren who desperately need something to do.

Sport will absorb their energy more creatively than smashing public property.

The mix of light metal towers with the changing colours of the middle roofs and the sea views through the whole complex will give much-needed energy to an outdated piece of our city.

Lastly, the recent Argus poll showed nearly 90 per cent were in favour. So, go on, be brave, support the plan.
