Regarding the letter from Simon Boyd, I always thought a life sentence for murder was exactly that. Although you do not necessarily serve life in prison, the conviction is with you for life and not spent or used up like other crimes might be.
So in fact you are a murderer for life, not an ex-murderer like you might become an ex-thief or ex-drink driver.
