This family woke up to a bread roll with a difference when a Hovis lorry crashed into their garden.

The Charmans were sleeping at home in Amberley, near Arundel, when the delivery vehicle left the road, careered towards their house and came to rest on its side 5ft from the living room.

The 20-tonne lorry destroyed a hedge, fencing and crushed a children's trampoline.

Clare Charman, 32, who was in the front bedroom with her locksmith husband Cliff, 42, at the time, said: "We could feel the vibration and we wondered what on earth had happened. We looked out of the window and saw the lights of the lorry shining into the garden and front room.

"I was really upset when I saw the trampoline had been crushed. Our kids use it all the time and if the accident had happened during the day, I dread to think what might have happened.

"It was a bit of a shock but at least nobody has been badly hurt."

The accident happened at about 4.45am yesterday close to a bend on the B2139 Turnpike Road.

The driver, in his 40s, hit his head but was not badly injured. He was taken to Worthing Hospital for a check-up.

Mrs Charman said she had campaigned to make the road safer because the bend was a blind spot and some vehicles drove too fast.

She will not let her children Buster, 12, and Millie, nine, cross the road on their own and escorts them to school.

Millie attends Amberley School while Buster catches the bus to Rydon Community College in Storrington.

Mrs Charman said: "I end up crossing the road several times every day. The primary school is opposite the house but there is no pavement where we need to cross so we have to walk a little way down the road instead.

"Work has been done to improve the area but there are still a lot of problems. It is a busy road and used as a rat-run, which makes things pretty dangerous."

A Sussex Police spokesman said it was believed the driver had lost control and clipped a telegraph pole, which toppled it onto its side.
