A murder trial jury has been shown the spot where the victim was attacked by a gang wielding baseball bats.

Gary Rae, a 40-year-old divorcee, was allegedly battered, kicked and punched to death by six teenagers.

He suffered horrific injuries during the beating outside his flat in High Street, Hailsham, on May 29 last year. The father-of-two died after William Devall, 18, allegedly rounded up a gang to attack him because he was jealous about his ex-girlfriend visiting Mr Rae.

The jury was taken from Hove Crown Court to visit the scene of the killing yesterday.

The seven female and five male jurors were accompanied by Judge Anthony Scott Gall, barristers, court staff and detectives.

They were shown around the South Road first floor flat of Shane Challice, 19, where the gang gathered then traced the route the gang is believed to have taken on the way to Mr Rae's flat in High Street.

They were shown around the small first floor flat and saw the patio where Mr Rae was attacked.

Devall, of Meadow Road, Hailsham, and a 17-year-old juvenile deny murder but admit manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Shane Challice, of South Road, Hailsham, and Jason Jackson, 18, of Albert Road, Polegate, together with two juveniles aged 16 and 17, also deny murder.
