Living up up to their name, Delays have been lying low since the release of 2004's debut sunshine-pop album, Faded Seaside Glamour.

But the wait is now over and the band are finally back on the road after last year's cancelled dates, armed with tunes from their new album, You See Colours.

Preceeded by the Prince song Raspberry Beret, the band played old favourites Wanderlust, Long Time Coming and the The La's-like Nearer Than Heaven. With his ability to swing back and forth between high falsettos and low and gritty but equally sweet vocals, lead singer Greg Gilbert's voice could strangely be compared to that of pop songstress Shakira.

Following a guitar-and-vocals-only version of debut album track Bedroom Scene, Delays stepped up the pace with some beat-led dance numbers from their new release. Album opening track, You And Me, was a wave of funked-up indie; This Town's Religion, a sleazy, bitter track that still managed to sound gloriously warm was declared to be "about chavs"; and catchy sure-fire hit Hideaway could be the band's next release, according to Gilbert himself.

Last song of the night should have been current single Valentine, but the band returned for an encore.

Bringing with it the atmosphere of Manchester's Hacienda club, courtesy of its opening beats and ethereal quality, music doesn't come more lush and trippy than this on a rainy March night.

It should be noted that the Delays hail from Southampton's shores and not the US West Coast, which their sound could be associated with. The gig couldn't have been more uplifting save for the use of a backing gospel choir. It's clear that the best things come to those who wait.
