Crisis club Crawley are today set to sign three players on loan from a Championship side.

Manager John Hollins is trying to bring in reinforcements ahead of tomorrow's relegation clash with Scarborough in case he is left without enough players.

Every contracted player had a one-to-one meeting with chairman Chas Majeed yesterday to talk about their futures.

They are allowed to leave for free after having their contract breached by Majeed's decision to cut wages in half.

Players are able to join clubs at any level outside the transfer window as long as they serve a 14-day notice.

Those that do not can only sign permanently for teams in Conference south or below or can leave on loan.

Hollins will use the money freed up by the departure of Simon Wormull to Lewes last week to fund the new arrivals and will have more available once other players start leaving.

Top scorer Daryl Clare is expected to be the next out the door. The former Boston striker has been allowed time off training this week to speak to five interested clubs, with Peterborough the favourites to secure his signature.

More players are likely to follow as Conference managers queue up to snap up Crawley's best talent.

Aldershot have revealed they want to sign club captain Ian Simpemba on loan with a view to a permanent deal and Exeter have said they are interested in winger Tony Scully.

Defender Dave Woozley, who is the players' PFA representative, said: "At the moment everyone is very much in limbo. We had the meetings but there is still a lot to sort out and it is hard for most of the lads to get their heads round. None of us have been in this position before.

"It is very frustrating because all you want to think about is what happens on the pitch. A lot of people think it is easy for the players because all they have to do is go to another club.

"But it is not as easy as that. A lot of clubs cannot afford to bring in new players at this stage of the season and others have nothing to play for so aren't looking to strengthen."

The situation has left Hollins unsure which players he will have to work with from one day to the next.

He said: "Things are changing all the time. At the moment I am assuming I will have all the players available and will continue to think that until I'm told otherwise."

Crawley's off-the-field turmoil has come as an unwelcome distraction from one of their biggest games of the season.

Reds will move out of the relegation zone and above Scarborough on goal difference with a win tomorrow.

Woozley said: "It is not the best preparation but I can assure everyone that all the players are fully focussed on Saturday.

"On the pitch is the only place we can get away from thinking about all this mess, so we are looking forward to getting out there.

"It is without doubt the biggest game of the season and none of us want to use this as an excuse."

Hollins prepared for the game by naming a full-strength side, excluding Clare, for a reserve fixture against QPR on Tuesday.

Steve Burton and Omari Coleman scored in a 2-1 win and Hollins believes the performance gave his players some much-needed confidence.

He said: "We played really well against a QPR side who had a few first teamers playing. We passed the ball brilliantly and I was really pleased with all the players. It was good for them and hopefully we can carry it on for Saturday."

Paul Merson has left Crawley's relegation rivals Tamworth after just 13 days at the club.
