Richard Midgley was today hoping to turn it on at the home of Kobe Bryant as his American college career heads to a finale.

The senior guard from Burgess Hill was in Pac-10 Conference action early today as his California Golden Bears met Oregon in the Championship semi-finals.

The game tipped off at 4.50am our time at the Staples Center, home of Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Cal have a chance of being selected for the prestigious NCAA tournament, which would give Midgley a perfect end to his four-year stint in the top tier of college basketball.

Today's game was his 98th for Cal.

He contributed nine points to the 82-67 quarter-final win over USC, also at the Staples Center.

USC led 33-31 at the half but Midgley edged Cal ahead nine seconds into the restart with his only three-point success from five attempts.

He was two-of-three from both two-point range and the free throw line.

Midgley's final home game at Cal was also against USC as the hosts ended their regular season with a 71-60 win to which their English guard contributed three points.

Interest will inevitably soon switch to where one of this country's hottest prospects starts his professional career next season.

Although a crack at the NBA appears to be out of the question, his brother Danny, now playing for Genesis Brighton Bears, believes Richard can aim high.

The elder Midgley brother said: "Richard should be going to a Euroleague team.

"He could play ACB basketball in Spain. He could be a starting point guard there and earn a lot of money. He needs a high level of competition."

It is play-off time too for Andy Smith at division two Bentley as they compete in their section of the NCAA tournament.

Bentley were co-champions in the Northeast 10 Conference and now feature in the NCAA Northeast Regionals, being staged at Easton, Massachusetts, as they aim for the main knockout.

Seeded four, Smith's team take on No. 5 Adelphi in the regional quarter-final at 1.30pm today our time.

The semis are late tomorrow and the final is on Tuesday.

Genesis Brighton Bears have been forced to switch one of their two remaining Brighton Centre fixtures.

The home game with Leicester Riders, originally scheduled for March 28, has been moved to the K2 in Crawley and will be played on Tuesday, April 4 (7pm).

Chester Jets come to the Triangle tonight (7pm) on the back of an 87-80 home defeat last night to Sheffield, for whom Sterling Davis had 25 points.

Newcastle beat Birmingham 83-67 on Tyneside.
