I applaud Brighton and Hove City Council for bringing forward plans to introduce bus lane cameras (The Argus, February 28). It cannot happen soon enough.
It's nearly ten years since Brighton and Hove Friends of the Earth first used Bill the cardboard copper to highlight how many car drivers abused the traffic regulations in this area (The Argus, June 17, 1996).
Motorists have got away with it for far too long.
It is about time the few drivers who flout the rules and hold up thousands of bus passengers every day should be fined if they insist on driving where they shouldn't.
Road space is at a premium in North Street and Western Road and the buses which use this area are vital to Brighton and Hove's economy.
This enforcement will speed up buses and increase capacity in the city centre, improving reliability.
Now the city council needs to take this concept further and look at removing bottlenecks to bus travel elsewhere in the city - then people in Brighton and Hove will know we are moving in the right direction.
