Sir Harry Kroto is absolutely right to protest against the University of Sussex's egregious decision to close its science department (The Argus, March 17).

Science is a major area of academic inquiry and chemists are able to address problems of vital interest to the wellbeing of humanity, and of industry.

If the university must close departments, then let the axe fall on disciplines such as arts and humanities, which excel in making their students less employable when they graduate than they were when they left school.
