Adam Pride of Portslade likes the new bus shelters in Palmeira Square (Letters, March 18).

And that's very much the point isn't it? He has the chance to express a view on them but residents in my ward had no such chance to express their views on the new designs or indeed ask questions as to whether they will carry advertising (which they will not). Brighton and Hove City Council announced the change on the Monday. By the Tuesday they were taking sledgehammers to them, leaving numerous unanswered questions as to what was replacing them at that time we didn't know an out-of-keeping space-age shelter wouldn't be put there instead.

And what a terrible and scandalous action to smash up the old shelters.

Couldn't they have been used elsewhere? I know of other Councillors in the city who would have loved them in their wards.

I cannot stand this kind of wastage by the council. Just think of the carbon emissions coming from the production of the old and new shelters.

The Palmeira Square regeneration scheme is good news for our area, and I've supported it throughout.

However, the council needs to manage the project far better, especially ensuring the work does not impact on local traders and residents.

And, by the way, Adam, I use the shelters frequently, as a resident myself who is totally reliant on public transport.
