When the mastermind of mechanically-manufactured music, Simon Cowell, came up with his latest lucrative idea in 2001, it was to produce operatic voices singing non-operatic music.

Two years of searching later, two classic fully-trained tenors, a baritone and a pop singer became the phenomenon whose crossover status has struck gold.

The exceptionally-voiced quartet's two albums, Il Divo and Ancora, nonchalantly swept aside all competition to saunter to the top of the charts. Covering a variety of melodramatic icons from Toni Braxton to Mariah Carey, their worldly marketing strategy is emphasised by singing in different languages.

The apparent result of a clinical breeding programme between Westlife and a selection of Armani catalogue models, they also embrace a spectrum of national stereotypes, from cleancut American David Miller to passionate Spaniard Carlos Marin, via their equally contrived Swiss and French bandmates.
