I always thought the aim of the Arts Council-funded residency of the LPO in Brighton was to bring down repertoire and performers the city would not otherwise see.

Concessions to this have included a magnificent performance of Tchaikovsy's Sixth Symphony by Glyndebourne's gem of a musical director, Vladimir Jurowaski, but the orchestra's principal conductor Kurt Masur has visited just the once.

Disappointingly, most of the concerts have been of standard orchestral fare, probably better performed by the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra.

This week's LPO concert was no exception.

Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture and Italian symphony are, once again, standard fare and Chopin's Piano Concerto No 1 is a piece which hardly sets the world alight.

Conductor Emmanuel Krivine and soloist Nelson Goerner gave reasonable performances but nothing thought-provoking or outstanding.
