The merits of incineration will be debated at a public meeting tomorrow.

Brighton's monthly Greenspeak meeting will address the problem of what to do about waste.

It will be held at Terraces Bar, Marine Parade, at 7.30pm.

The main speakers will be Graham Ennis of the Omega Institute, Christine Wiltshire, a waste campaigner from Friends Of The Earth and Kat Neeser from the Take It Back anti-packaging campaign.

The waste local plan and planning applications for an incinerator at Newhaven and a waste transfer station at Hollingdean have been the subject of much scrutiny and opposition.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has recently launched a waste strategy review and consultation setting out plans to build incinerators across the UK.

There are other options such as thermal depolymerisation, which produces no toxic waste.

Martin Grimshaw, of Greenspeak, which is supported by Brighton and Hove Green Party, said: "Our landfills are almost full and doing nothing is not an option. The council has difficult decisions to make on waste which will affect our quality of life and wallets for decades to come.

"It is vital we don't waste our money on anything less than the best possible deal for the people of this region, which will also be the most sustainable. We need clear leadership to move Brighton and Hove towards zero waste."
