So Woodvale Cemetery is "about to become" a tourist attraction? (The Argus, April 6). Actually it has been one for many years - The Argus even published a full-page feature on my own tours of Woodvale and the Extra-Mural Cemeteries in May 2002.
The current management of Woodvale is equally keen to encourage a wider public appreciation of the cemeteries and, in 1995, Brighton Council published Lewes Road Cemeteries: A Walker's Guide, by Maire McQueeney.
Maire and I have guided a range of tours in the Woodvale and Extra-Mural cemeteries for 14 years.
We also organised a very successful Heritage Open Day at the Extra-Mural in 1995. I shall again be leading tours in this year's Brighton Fringe Festival starting from Woodvale Lodge (off Lewes Road Gyratory) at 2pm on each Sunday in May.
We are following a long tradition, because it was an essential part of the original plan in the 1850s that these wonderful, landscaped cemeteries should be visited and enjoyed by the public.
