While I appreciate everyone is entitled to their opinion, I really couldn't let your correspondent's review of last Thursday's Stiff Little Fingers concert at the Concorde 2 go unchallenged.

I have been a fan of the band for a long, long time and I honestly believe that, if anything, they play with more passion now than they ever did.

After a break from seeing them of about 20 years, I went to see them again at Concorde 2 last year.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much. I pretty much thought they would be exactly as they were described in your review - a shadow of their former selves. However, I was pleasantly surprised, even though last year we only had one of the original members left - the inimitable Jake Burns.

Last year's gig was absolutely great. This year's concert saw the return of the original bass player, Ali McMordie, and the enthusiasm and passion they played with was exactly like the old days, if not better.

After the fantastic preview in The Argus on Thursday, I was expecting a review which at least in part reflected what myself and everyone else there (except your critic) experienced. I was disappointed to read how she felt about what was undoubtedly the performance of their lives.

I wonder if she was actually there? If she was, it seems she may have formed her opinion before she went and then just wrote what she expected, not what she actually saw.

Yes, none of us are getting any younger and a lot of the audience are middle-aged but there are a lot of kids still coming to see the band and becoming fans just as I did when I was a teenager. I was lucky enough to get backstage after the concert and there were two little lads there who couldn't have been more than 12 years old.

Jake Burns and all the other band members were more than happy to sign posters and chat away to these young fans as well as us older ones.

They have always been like this. They always go out of their way to look out for their fans. They always have and they always will. They have a website with a chat-room that they visit regularly to talk to their fans. How many other "stars" do that?

Also, not all of their glories are old. Jake has just released a solo album and the band will be returning to the studio this year to record yet more new material, as they have been doing for the past 15 years.

As for Jake asking people not to throw things, he's always done that, even in the old days. It's nothing to do with punk, it's to do with safety.

Do you think pints of liquid and masses of electrical equipment mix well?
