With respect to the threatened Midsummer Tree at Broadwater, as I am no dendrological expert, I hesitate to intervene in the erudite exchange between Margaret King and Chris Hare (Letters, March 28 and April 4).

It does, though, seem a pity such an apparently important example of the survival of, at the very least, our Victorian forebears' interest in folklore and its oral transmission should be lost to our contemporaries.
