Matt Prior will not play any cricket for Sussex until next month.

The 24-year-old has been told to rest by England coach Duncan Fletcher even though is not on a central contract.

A week ago Prior was vomiting on the outfield because of dehydration during England's one-day international in Jamshedpur.

He only returned from a gruelling trip on Monday and the plan was always to rest him for today's Championship opener against Warwickshire at Hove (11am).

But he will also miss next week's four-day game against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl and Sussex's first match in the new-look Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy against Surrey on April 30.

Cricket manager Mark Robinson said: "It's a request from the ECB and the last thing we want to do is create a club versus country situation for Matt."

In his absence Andrew Hodd keeps wicket fresh from his century against Cardiff UCCE on Monday.

Robinson said: "Hoddy couldn't go into the match with any more confidence. He's kept really well in the friendlies and then to get a hundred is great for him as well."

Sussex have named a 12-man squad and it will be interesting to see which of their five seamers is left out.

The quintet - James Kirtley, Jason Lewry, Duncan Spencer, Luke Wright and Robin Martin-Jenkins - all impressed against Cardiff UCCE and Wright, who looked the quickest bowler on show - could well have forced his way into the reckoning.

Martin-Jenkins' composed hundred underlined his batting prowess and makes it hard to leave him out.

Robinson added: "Jason is possibly a fraction undercooked because of his back problem but he bowled a really heavy spell on Monday which was encouraging.

"James is working away and Duncan showed he had some quicker balls in him so it is going to be a tough decision."

Mushtaq Ahmed plays his 50th first-class game for Sussex while Martin-Jenkins needs one more wicket to complete 250.

Warwickshire will be led by former Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak for the first time but new recruit Daniel Vettori, the New Zealand left-arm spinner, is on Test duty and misses out.

There is no place either for former Sussex wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose whose debut for his new county has been delayed by a back injury.
