Metal detectors are to be used on people entering clubs and pubs to check for weapons.

The hand-held detectors have been given to night clubs and late-night venues employing door staff across West Sussex.

The county's Violent Crime Reduction Team have launched the initiative in partnership with licensed premises.

A team spokeswoman said: "People taking weapons into pubs and nightclubs is not an issue in West Sussex but there is a growing national trend for people to carry weapons, a trend which we do not wish to experience in our county.

"This proactive measure will ensure West Sussex continues to stay a safe place for a night out by making people aware that entry to a venue will involve a mandatory check for weapons."

Detectors will also be placed in police cars across West Sussex.

The detectors vibrate to alert the user to concealed metal objects including knives, guns and even foil wraps of drugs.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Jones said: "People carrying offensive weapons such as knives will not be tolerated and will be arrested.

"Sussex Police are determined to make this area safer and allow everyone to enjoy a peaceful and relaxed night out without fear of trouble from thugs. This is an excellent partnership initiative."

Steve Dennis, of Luminar Leisure which runs four night-time venues across West Sussex, said: "Partnership initiatives between licence holders in high-profile venues and the authorities supports the spirit of the Licensing Act 2003 and confirms the high level of responsibility of the industry in West Sussex. Customer safety is, after all, the principal aim of us all."

Lionel Barnard, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for public safety, said: "This is a first class example of prevention being better than cure.

"It reflects the Violent Crime Reduction Team's aim of ensuring our county remains a safe place in which to live and enjoy ourselves."

Sussex Police said the initiative was being watched and, if successful, it could be expanded to other areas of the county.
