Think of a seaside postcard and you would normally imagine a sunny beach scene, a cheap and cheerful pier or a bevy of bathing beauties.

But when two University of Brighton art students asked designers and celebrities to create their own postcard, the results were far from typical.

Alex Bec, 20, and Will Hudson, 22, both of New Steine Mansions, Brighton, challenged them with the brief: "If you could do anything tomorrow what would it be?" as part of a project to raise money for their final-year degree show.

The responses ranged from the serious to the surreal to the downright silly.

Brighton DJ Mr Scruff's hand-drawn postcard shows a mug pouring liquid into the sea with a boat floating on the waves.

He has added the words "If I could do anything tomorrow, I would turn the sea into tea and sail around it in a pastry boat with a nice cup of brine."

In contrast, Anthony Burrill, designer of London Underground safety posters, has printed the inspirational message "Go everywhere, do everything" in black capital letters.

David Shrigley, a cartoonist for The Guardian newspaper, has drawn a rabbit munching on a carrot next to a skeleton with the words "Try something new" above it.

Other responses to the theme included growing the perfect stubble, flying around the world and building a 30ft statue of a pin-striped besuited teapot to display in Trafalgar Square.

Alex and Will, both second year students, spent about £4,000 producing 1,000 packs of each of the 22 postcards, which will be on sale from Saturday.

Will said: "The designers we asked to help us have been awesome. We wanted to do a book of illustrations because we thought that would sell.

"We had to think of the idea pretty quickly because we had one designer who was going to do a drawing for us and we had to decide there and then."

Alex said: "We thought lots of the designers would be out of reach because they are people we idolise but they were happy to help."

A launch party is being held at hed Space in Quebec Street, Brighton, on Saturday, when a large print of each postcard will also be sold.

Will said: "It's been a bit stressful having 22,000 postcards on your doorstep but we roped in a few friends to help us out."

The postcards are on sale in Pussy in Kensington Gardens, Dave's Comics, in Sydney Street, Mini Mart in Gloucester Road and Castor and Pollux in Kings Road Arches, all in Brighton, or online at www.ifyoucould.co.uk
