Recently signed to Memphis Industries to become label-mates with The Pipettes and The Go! Team, Field Music are part of the North-East's new wave of bands, with past and present line-ups intertwined with the likes of The Futureheads and Maximo Park.

The core trio of the band includes Andy Moore and brothers Peter and David Brewis (ex-drummer and producer for The Futureheads), and their ever-shifting part-time players include Maximo Park's drummer Tom English.

It can't hurt having friends in high places, but Field Music's sound - a curiously romantic, psychedelic folk pop odyssey merits success with or without approving remarks such as: "Wonderful ideas, adventurous approaches to towards their music," from The Futureheads' frontman Barry Hyde, and: "Musical whirlwinds with their hearts in the right places," from Maximo Park's Paul Smith.

Field Music released their selftitled debut last year but don't be surprised if the music has passed you by. Theirs is a quietly creeping success, so far noted mostly in the nooks and crannies of music magazines and fanzines rather than splashed across the front cover of NME.

"We were never really interested in making a big splash," says Peter. "We made the record we wanted to make and we're just aiming to try and survive making the music we want to make."

This no-nonsense attitude also serves to downplay any hyped-up notion of the Sunderland scene.

"It was a case of a few different people who decided they were going to do music and help each other out where they could," says Peter. "But we all had similar ideas," he admits.

Such ideas include an unwavering commitment to originality.

"We try to avoid sounding like anything else," says Peter.

"I want to avoid sounding irrelevant. If you sound like somebody else, then why not listen to the thing it sounds like?"

Thankfully it's not all hard slog and earnestness. As you would hope, Field Music are making the most of their newfound celebrity status.

"We're going to support The Futureheads on their UK tour and we've already been on tour with Maximo Park. It was good," says Peter.

"It was nice to hang around with your friends, and they had lovely catering. It wasn't quite what we were used to."
