A giant temporary office block could be built while a financial services company refurbishes its tower block.
American Express plans to build temporary office buildings three storeys high in front of and behind its European headquarters, Amex House in Edward Street, Brighton, where about 2,000 people work.
The temporary buildings, would house staff while the ten-storey office block, built in 1977, is refurbished.
About 200 people would work in them at a time until each department's floor had been given a facelift. After three years the renovation would be complete and they would be removed.
A 40ft building would be erected on the plaza in front of Amex House with 5,346sqft of floor space.
The building behind Amex House would having parking spaces on the ground floor and offices on the first and second. It would be 37ft tall and would back on to houses in Mighell Street.
In a statement, Amex's planning consultant Nathaniel Lichfield and Partners said the refurbishment was essential and would secure the financial services giant's future in Brighton.
