The devastated family of a bubbly 18-year-old who died after a collision with a recovery truck visited the scene last night to pay tribute.

Kerry Moss, of Garden Close, Shoreham, was walking with a friend along the main A27 road in Offington, Worthing, when it is believed she stepped out into the road at a pedestrian crossing near Uplands Avenue.

Her family understand she may have been talking on her mobile phone at the time.

She was taken by ambulance to Worthing Hospital where she died at about 11.50pm on Friday.

People started placing floral tributes to the trainee hairdresser at the accident scene on Saturday morning, with messages left in memory of a girl who "always made you smile" and had a "bubbly personality".

Police officers removed some written tributes although it was not clear why.

Kerry's parents Samantha and Robert Moss, her brother and sister Ashley and Natasha and her grandparents, aunt and uncle and cousins visited the scene on Sunday afternoon after leaving the hospital.

Mr and Mrs Moss, also of Garden Close, had been on their first holiday alone as a couple when the accident happened and had to take three separate flights to get home, arriving at Heathrow yesterday morning.

Mrs Moss, 38, said: "We flew my mum over from Spain to watch the children while we went to Egypt for our first ever holiday alone - we never even had a honeymoon. Mum did a fantastic job and Kerry and her brother and sister had a lovely week with my mum. They don't get to see their gran very often and she took them out for dinner.

On Friday night mum phoned to say Kerry had asked if she could go out. I said she is 18 so as long as you know where she is, I wouldn't stop her. The next call we had was at 1.30am from my sister Angela and she told my husband Kerry had died. My husband was saying Sam, she's dead, Kerry's dead'."

Mr Moss, 50, said: "She was a really loving daughter."

Kerry's family said she was a bubbly girl, full of life, who had touched so many people's lives. She was an extrovert and would make friends everywhere she went.

Kerry had worked at Synergie Hair Salon in Portland Road, Worthing and was due to qualify this month.

When the staff heard the news on Saturday they decided to close the salon for the rest of the day.

Kerry's grandfather Peter Scott said: "She was a very beautiful girl and now she is dead."
